Community Impact

Our philosophy of “people helping people” can be seen in our daily interactions with members or serving our local community.

Supporting Our Local Communities

Georgia United Credit Union takes great pride in being an active and responsible member of the communities we serve. Every year we support events and programs that focus on strengthening our school systems, financial literacy and helping our communities.

Volunteering

All Georgia United team members are given three paid volunteer days each year to serve at credit union-sponsored programs or for a charitable organization of their choice. Don’t be surprised to find our team members volunteering at a local elementary school career day or rolling up their sleeves for service organizations.

Financial Education

We are passionate about furthering financial literacy in our communities. Our team members can be found hosting educational seminars—both online and in person—to help teach important financial skills like money management, budgeting, investing and more. If you need a speaker for your community group, school or business, we'd love to connect with you.

More through our foundation

The Georgia United Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization committed to improving the quality of life for children and families in the communities we serve. Our Foundation partners with Georgia United Credit Union team members and volunteers to fund and deliver impactful programs across the state including:

I'm so appreciative of the "mission in action" behind the staff at Georgia United Credit Union. The staff at Georgia United are a living embodiment of giving back to the community and for that, the Y is truly grateful. Your gift of dollars and time has a big impact for many in our community's mind, body, and spirit.

We rely on support from community partners like Georgia United Credit Union. With their funding, we will serve so many families during these trying times. Filling basic needs, like diapers, for families makes such a difference. Collaborations and partners are what help make our communities stronger.

Georgia United Adds Experienced Legal Executive to Leadership Team

Sep 5, 2023

DULUTH, GA  – Georgia United Credit Union is pleased to announce the appointment of Janis W. Johnson as the organization’s inaugural general counsel, effective September 5, 2023.

In this role, which reports to Georgia United Chief Financial Officer Bob Bogart, Johnson is primary legal counsel and oversees the credit union’s legal and business matters. Her responsibilities include providing direct legal advice and support to the executive leadership team, business units and other support centers and advancing the interests of the credit union, its operations and most importantly, its 150,000-plus members.

Johnson is a well-regarded legal executive with extensive experience in the financial services industry, and her impressive career also includes a stint as an assistant attorney general for the state of South Carolina in the late 1990s.

Establishing in-house legal counsel is a key component of Georgia United’s growth strategy.

“Having access to immediate legal advice and Janis’ specialized expertise is a proactive risk and management tactic that will improve compliance turnarounds and streamline decision-making within the organization,” said Bogart. “And that ultimately enhances the member experience.”

Johnson’s background in employment law is crucial for Georgia United as the organization continues to explore the talent pool across state lines afforded by the still-emerging remote/hybrid work model.

Prior to joining Georgia United, Johnson was senior vice president, deputy general counsel and corporate secretary for Amalgamated Bank, based in New York and Charlotte, N.C. She also served as associate general counsel at banking titans Truist Bank and Bank of America.

“I am honored and excited to champion the credit union movement,” said Johnson. “I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work representing Georgia United as we continue to grow and meet the business challenges of our strategic, but complex growth-minded journey to redefine the member experience.”

Johnson holds a Juris Doctorate degree as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina.
