Georgia United Foundation Donates 7.5 Tons of Food to Local Food Banks

Mar 9, 2020

DULUTH, GA – The Georgia United Foundation Can Hunger® program, now in its eighth year, collected an astounding number of food and monetary donations thanks to the generous contributions made by their members, team members, civic groups and local communities.

Throughout the month of February, all Georgia United branch locations collected non-perishable food and monetary gifts to help stock the shelves of 10 local food pantries. In total, Georgia United collected 7.5 tons of food and $12,570 in cash donations – all within 20 days.

Several schools were excited to help support this worthy cause and the efforts made by the students, faculty and staff contributed to the program’s overall success. Georgia United Credit Union Chief Marketing Officer, Aaron Chestnut stated, “This has been a great way for students to be difference makers in their communities by donating food items for their neighbors in need.”

The Academy of Scholars® located at 5096 Panola Industrial Road in Decatur, had a remarkable donation of over 8,000 food items – with their kindergarten and first grade students donating the most in the school. In addition, Canby Lane Elementary, located 4150 Green Hawk Trail in Decatur; Henderson Middle, located 2830 Henderson Mill Road in Atlanta and Eton Elementary, located at 829 GA-286 in Chatsworth, all made an enormous impact on their community.

The Can Hunger program is focused on building healthier, stronger communities free of hunger. Food insecurity plagues 17.8 percent of Georgia residents living below the poverty level, with more than one in five children living in food insecure households. Food pantries typically see a downturn in donations after the holidays, which is why the Foundation hosts this event in February. Over the last eight years, the Foundation’s Can Hunger program has raised over 115 tons of food for the local food banks in the communities they serve.
