Georgia United Credit Union Foundation Helps Fund Over 61,000 Meals for Local Community
DULUTH, GA – Georgia United Credit Union Foundation helped feed families, children and seniors who are experiencing food insecurity through their ninth annual Can Hunger food drive. Thanks to the generous monetary gifts made by
members, team members and community, a total of $15,284 was collected and distributed to local food bank partners.
Monetary donations go a long way with food banks due to their strong purchasing power. Additionally, monetary contributions allow food banks and pantries to provide items such as protein, fresh fruit and allergen-free foods. This year’s Can Hunger
program funded approximately 61,200 meals that will be served to neighbors in need.
Due to ongoing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Georgia United Foundation shifted from collecting canned food items at the credit union’s branch locations to holding a virtual food drive and accepting monetary donations. From the
Foundation’s donation page, donors were able to provide a monetary gift for a listed community food bank partner of their choosing. The credit union’s foundation partnered with ten local food banks including: Atlanta Community Food Bank,
Cross Pointe Ministries, Dalton Greater Works, Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter, Laurens Baptist Association Food Bank, NETWorks of Tucker, Operation Lunchbox, The Place at Forsyth and Rockdale Emergency Relief.
One in seven Georgia residents rely on food pantries to help feed their family. The annual Can Hunger program helps food banks replenish their shelves after the holidays when donations are typically low.
