Georgia United is LSCU's 2022 Credit Union of the Year for Georgia

Jun 20, 2023

DULUTH, GA - In recognition of the organization’s commitment to member and community service, outstanding day-to-day operations, financial prowess and ongoing efforts to advance the credit union movement, Georgia United has been named the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates (LSCU) 2022 Credit Union of the Year in Georgia (more than $500 million in assets).

This is the second time Georgia United has captured this honor, previously earning the 2019 title.

The award was presented June 16 at the Southeastern Credit Union Conference and Expo (SCUCE) in Orlando, Fla.

LSCU represents more than 300 credit unions in Georgia, Florida and Alabama that have more than 11.2 million members and a combined total of more than $165 billion in assets.

“We are grateful to be recognized by our peers with this award and honored to make a difference in the lives of our members and the communities that we serve,” said Georgia United President and CEO Debbie Smith. “Congratulations also to the other winners in Georgia, Alabama and Florida – together we make the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ stronger by collectively advocating for our members. At Georgia United, our members have been, and always will be, at the center of everything we do.”

The award's criteria includes a focus on community outreach, an area that sets Georgia United apart from other financial institutions. In 2022, through the credit union’s philanthropic arm, Georgia United Foundation, the organization launched its inaugural Day of Giving and donated $10,000 in relief funds to the Ukrainian Credit Unions Displacement Fund. The foundation also provided 25,800 meals to local food banks, raised $5,445 for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta by participating in the Credit Union for Kids Bowl-a-Thon, awarded six higher education scholarships (total of $30,000), provided 1,179 holiday gifts to children in foster care and awarded $173,034 in grants to five schools for improvement projects.

Also in 2022, more than 50 Georgia United team members also volunteered at Junior Achievement Discovery Centers, helping middle schoolers learn about entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
